Students honor veterans

OCS student Cooper Cullins stood up in honor of his brother, Josh, who died while serving in Afghanistan.

In a red, white and blue Veterans Day Celebration, Oaks Christian School honored American veterans and paid tribute to an Oaks family whose son died in service.

U. S. Navy Captain Brad “Brick” Conners was the master of ceremonies for the Veterans Day Chapel that was attended by more than 1,400 OCS students, invited guests and veterans.

The OCS Boy Scout Color Guard presented the colors and OCS alumnus Michael Alexander led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Evelyn Rhodes, Anna Conners, and Christian Mayer laid a wreath in honor of service men and women who lost their lives.

OCS student Cooper Cullins was honored in memory of his brother, Josh, who died while serving in Afghanistan. Parents James and Barbara Cullins also came on stage for a tribute to Josh.

To honoring all those who have served, OCS middle school student Elizabeth Sams sang the song, “Dear Veteran,” which was written by her mother, Renee Sams. Elizabeth recently received an commendation from the Secretary of the Army John M. McHugh for the song.

The ceremony closed with OCS band teacher Ryan Kelly playing Taps and the Color Guard retiring the colors.

After the event, OCS students came on stage to personally thank the many veterans in attendance. A reception for veterans and their families followed at Calvary Community Church.
