Students from Willow Elementary School in Agoura Hills turned trash into treasure this weekend when they brought their recyclables to the school campus for a fundraiser to support children with cancer and their families.

All told, the students collected 135 lbs. of plastic bottles, 60 lbs. of aluminum cans and 41 lbs. of glass which will translate into $250 that will go to Mac’s Project, a nonprofit organization that supports families whose children are being treated at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.

Named after a little girl named Mackenzie who is currently cancer-free after a 14-month battle with the disease, Mac’s Project leaders chose recycling as a way to raise money because of the dual benefits. “Not only will we generate funds . . . but we will hopefully be making a difference in keeping our planet beautiful and healthy,” organizers said.

At least one Willow Elementary School family knows firsthand what it’s like to have a young loved one stricken with cancer. Aaron and Megan Friedland, a 2nd grader and a kindergartener at the school, have a 7-year-old cousin currently at Childrens Hospital being treated for brain cancer.

The Mac project is an ongoing fundraiser organized at Willow by Willow’s Kids F.A.C.E. Club (Kids for a clean environment). For information visit www.macsproject.com or call (661) 977-7506.
