Adolfo Camarillo High School of Camarillo won the 2016 Ventura County Mock Trial.

The Scorpions’ victory ends a five-year winning streak by La Reina High School of Thousand Oaks.

The mock trial results were announced during the Feb. 29 awards ceremony at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center.

The top eight teams are, in order of placement: Adolfo Camarillo Scorpions, Grace Brethren, Oak Park Black, Saint Bonaventure, Newbury Park Gold, Westlake High School, Trinity Pacific Epsilon and Oaks Christian Gold.

Thirty-two Ventura County teams took part in the competition.

Camarillo High School will advance to the California Mock Trial this month.

Almost 500 Ventura County students in grades nine through 12 participate. More than 150 attorneys volunteer their time to score the competition.

The Ventura County Mock Trial gives students a firsthand look at the criminal justice system by having them portray the principals in a cast of courtroom characters. Student teams study a hypothetical case and present their case before volunteer judges.

The Ventura County Office of Education and the Ventura County Superior Court hosted the event with support from the Constitutional Rights Foundation.
