Still time to recycle those Christmas trees

L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky is reminding residents throughout Los Angeles County that they can conveniently recycle their Christmas trees this year. Most areas provide curbside recycling during regular pickup days while others offer drop-off sites where the trees can be recycled over the weekend of Jan. 6 and 7.

Yaroslavsky said that under the program, trees will be chipped and used for mulch at county parks and landfills, which helps residents safely dispose of very dry trees while preserving diminishing landfill capacity.

Residents should prepare trees for disposal by removing tree stands and all hooks, nails, ornaments and tinsel before hauling them to the drop-off sites.

Information on sites and schedules for unincorporated and incorporated areas, and for garbage disposal districts, may be obtained by logging on to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works Website at http://dpw.co.la.ca.us/epd/xmastrees/index.cfm or by calling the County Department of Public Works Environmental Hotline at (888) CLEAN LA.
