Staged reading of ‘8’

The Church of the Epiphany and the Oak Park chapter of PFLAG will host a staged reading of “8,” a documentary courtroom drama chronicling the federal constitutional challenge to California’s Proposition 8, written by Dustin Lance Black, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of “Milk” and “J. Edgar.”

The staged readings will take place at 7 p.m. Fri. and Sat., Sept. 26 and 27 at the church, 5450 Churchwood Drive, Oak Park.

The play is an account of the federal district court trial in Perry v. Schwarzenegger (now Hollingsworth v. Perry), the case filed by AFER that overturned Prop. 8, the proposition that banned samesex marriage.

The story for “8” is framed by the trial’s closing arguments of June 2010 featuring the best arguments and testimony from both sides and is based on the text of official trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families.

Admission is $10 in cash or $10 worth of nonperishable foodstuffs for donation to Manna of Conejo Valley.
