St. Patrick’s Episcopal to jazz up service





St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church will host Jazz Worship with the Matt Harris Jazz Trio at the 10:15 a.m. Holy Eucharist service Sun., Sept. 24. The trio will play jazz pieces for certain portions of the liturgy.

The combo’s appearance is part of The Arts at St. Patrick’s performance series that integrates diverse musical styles into the church experience.

The trio consists of Harris on piano, bassist Domenic Genova and drummer Lee Spath.

Harris is director of jazz studies at Cal State Northridge. In addition to directing the Jazz “A” Band, he teaches arranging, improvisation, combos, jazz harmony and private piano instruction.

He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami and his master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music.

Harris moved to Los Angeles after touring with jazz greats Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich. His versatility as a writer/ arranger and performer keeps him busy in the LA studio scene.

His music can be heard on numerous jingles performed with Ben Vereen, Ann Jullian, Andy Williams, Englebert Humperdink, Rita Moreno, Tom Jones and other renowned performers.

Harris has recorded two CDs of original music and more than 100 pieces of music.
