Special tree
will be missed

At the intersection of Rustling Oaks and Hollow Oak in Agoura Hills, a giant, majestic, magnificent and very old oak tree was dismantled, dismembered, taken down to the ground. Mighty and strong with gently curving trunk and branches, it had gotten sick, we were told, and could not be saved.

Our daughter, Jacqui, from her stroller over 10 years ago on one of our evening walks through the neighborhood, had pointed her tiny finger up at the special tree and named it "Cherry Love." It had been a special landmark for anyone getting directions to come and visit us.

The city gave notice of the tree’s demise only the day before it was consumed by a chipper. A sheriff’s car was stationed at the site on the morning it began. We are sure these were precautions lest Jacqui, a self-described "hippie," would chain herself to the tree with flowers in her hair to protest the action. The tree was adorned with posters of love and protest the evening before. We had all shared safety concerns for those heavy limbs reaching out over the street, but we will miss this tree, this friend, so very much.
