The A.E. Wright Spartan faculty, staff and student body celebrated their commitment to the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program on Jan. 30 with a kickoff that included an assembly, snacks, music, banners and a new A.E. Wright Honor Flag.

As part of the celebration, students signed a pledge stating that they will not bully or allow bullying at the school.

The Olweus program is an internationally known wholeschool activity that has been shown to improve peer relations and reduce or prevent bullying among students.

Dan Olweus is a Swedish academic who has devoted more than 30 years to research and intervention work in the area of bullying and victim problems among schoolchildren and youths.

In the 1980s he conducted the world’s first systematic intervention study against bullying, which documented a number of positive effects of his bullying prevention program.

A.E. Wright counselor Erin Howard and Principal Kimmarie Taylor trained the teachers, staff, parents and community volunteers in techniques to help stop bullying.
