Soccer documentary to be shown in Agoura

A documentary about a local club soccer team that traveled to the United Kingdom will be screened at Agoura Regency Theatre at 9 a.m. Sat., July 10.

The timing of the film “11 Days” is appropriate—the FIFA World Cup final will be held the following day.

Dan Metcalfe, an executive producer of “11 Days” and coach of the DMS11 Soccer Academy of Westlake featured in the documentary, expressed excitement about the response after the soldout premiere in May.

“The reception we’ve had from people who have seen it has been one of excitement and inspiration,” said Metcalfe, who has worked as a soccer choreographer on movies including “Kicking & Screaming” and “She’s the Man.”

“The audience has been able to relate to it in the things in their lives. People have left the movie theater feeling inspired, that they can achieve anything they want.”

In “11 Days,” cameras follow Metcalfe and a team of boys 18 and under from Westlake, Agoura, Calabasas, Simi Valley, Newbury Park and Camarillo on an eyeopening trip to England.

The players test their mettle against youth teams from Fulham and West Ham, whose main squads play in the English Premier League.

After 240 hours of footage, the movie was pared down to one hour, 39 minutes, roughly the length of time of a soccer match.

“We didn’t know what we were going to get,” Metcalfe said. “Everything was completely reactionary. The crazy thing about the story is it really ended up being about relationships. Soccer was just a backdrop.”

Metcalfe hopes the documentary will be showcased at film festivals and around the world.
