SoCal Curling Club invites new members

THROWING A STONE—Some call curling

THROWING A STONE—Some call curling “chess on ice” because of the complex nature of stone placement and shot selection.

The SoCal Curling Club will host an open house and learn to curl session for anyone interested in the sport from 6:45 to 9:15 p.m. Sat., Aug. 1 at the Easy Street Iceoplex, 131 W. Easy St., Simi Valley.

The session is open to beginning and experienced curlers 12 years and older.

The fee for the session is $20 and includes equipment, ice time and instruction. Tennis shoes, gloves and warm clothing are recommended.

Sign-ups for the league’s fall session are open. Beginning and experienced players are welcome. Visitors are welcome to watch any night during league play beginning Aug. 8.

The SoCal Curling Club is a family-oriented curling club based in Simi Valley comprising players of all skill levels from throughout Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

Started in 2006, the club is dedicated to develop curling into a permanent, yearround sport accessible to everyone in the area.

Recent Olympic coverage has made curling one of the fastest growing sports in the country.

Two teams of four players each compete on a rectangular sheet of ice. Teams take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones down the ice toward the target, called the house. Two sweepers with brooms accompany each rock to help direct the stones to their resting place. The complex nature of stone placement and shot selection has led some to refer to curling as “chess on ice.”

Curling has been played in the United States since about 1830. The first association, Grand National Curling Club of America, was founded in 1867 and is still in operation. Today, more than 135 curling clubs and more than 15,000 curlers play the game across the country.
