Sneaky raccoon keeps eyes on the prize

SNACK TIME—The sly raccoon scopes out a bowl of cat food.

There is a shelf outside my kitchen widow in Westlake Village, a passthrough to the patio. My cat has her bed up there and we put her food up there to keep it away from bugs. A clip holds the bowl in place. There is a step up so the cat can get to the shelf.

One evening I saw a raccoon on the shelf contemplating the food and investigating the situation.

The next night I set a camera up on a tripod, laid some black cloth over the sink so it wouldn’t reflect in the window, and waited.

I managed to take a photo just before the raccoon jumped up to eat the cat’s food. Now it comes back almost every night around 10 p.m. for seconds and thirds. It likes to check things out before it jumps up. I think it looks cute when its head is peeking over the shelf.

The raccoon must have an injured rear leg because it hops across the yard. Since the animal has a boo boo, I gave it the name, Boo Boo.

I haven’t been able to get any of the animal shelters interested in helping the injured raccoon, so I do what I can.
