Simi quilters’ show to feature local artists

The Simi Valley Quilt Guild will present its biennial quilt show Sat. and Sun., Oct. 6 and 7 at Rancho Santa Susana Community Center, 5005 E. Los Angeles Ave., Simi Valley.

With the theme “Celebrate!” this year’s event will feature special events in addition to the display of more than 100 quilts.

Don Beld will speak on late 19th century quilts at 11 a.m. Saturday, and at 1 p.m. there will be a live auction of dozens of quilts contributed by guild members.

At 11 a.m. Sunday, Annie Copeland will speak about how quilts are valued, and Sam Hunter will talk on “Health and the Quilter” at 1 p.m.

Both days will feature a merchants’ mall, boutique, quilt appraisals, door prizes, treasure hunt and food service.

In conjunction with the show, a challenge was issued to quilters to submit hangings celebrating California. Melody Myers of Simi Valley chose to feature a star motif, and Thousand Oaks’ Barbara DeKeater celebrated the contributions of Chinese immigrants. Donna Noble of Thousand Oaks produced a look at the art on orange crates, and Sharon Mountford of Canoga Park used six photographs of favorite places enclosed in green and gold sashing.
