Silent film will make audience laugh out loud

The National Park Service in conjunction with the Silent Society of Hollywood Heritage, Inc. will present its next "Silents Under the Stars" feature film at 7:30 p.m. Sun., Aug. 18 at Paramount Ranch, on Cornell Road in rural Agoura.

Featuring Buster Keaton and Kathryn McGuire, "Sherlock, Jr." is a 1924 classic silent movie. Keaton stars as the cleanup man and projectionist at a local movie theater who has become an amateur detective through a correspondence course.

There is an involved dream sequence where Keaton—as the inventive and invincible detective Sherlock, Jr.—solves a crime and saves his sweetheart from a villainous sheik. It is considered one of Keaton’s and silent comedy’s best films.

Michael Mortilla will provide lively musical accompaniment for the film’s antics.

There is no fee for park entrance or parking, but a fee will be charged for admission to the film, which is shown in an outdoor screened pavilion on the grounds of the historic movie ranch, which features an evocative Western set. Come early, tour the set, bring a picnic dinner. Snacks and beverages will be available for a fee. A flashlight is recommended due to limited lighting in the parking area.
