Sign up for kindergarten

Sumac Elementary School will host a kindergarten orientation on Tues., March 21 at 9 a.m., in the multipurpose room in the school at 6050 N. Calmfield Drive, Agoura Hills.

Principal Karen Hansen said the parent meeting will discuss the curriculum of the extended day program offered at Sumac.

Parents will meet the kindergarten teachers who will describe the program and answer questions.

“The success of Sumac’s extended day program has been a model for other schools in the district,” Hansen said.

Kindergarten students go to school from 8:05 a.m. until 1:05 p.m. The extended time allows teachers to meet California’s academic standards while allowing enough time for children to develop social skills through creative, imaginative play, Hansen said.

In addition to academic subjects and creative play, Sumac students participate in weekly music and computer sessions. Specialists teach the physical education classes and children also make weekly trips to the school library.

Kindergarten registration will begin Tues., April 4. Packets are now available at the school.
