Senior Congress to discuss memory loss

“Senior moments,” those instances when expressing the right word or phrase takes longer than usual, is a phrase often used in jest for the real problem of memory decline as we age.

The Conejo/Las Virgenes Future Foundation (CLVFF) will focus on memory problems during its fifth annual Senior Congress from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wed., Feb. 4 at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church, 5801 Kanan Road in Westlake Village.

The topic for this year’s congress is “Thanks for the Memory: Understand It, Care for It and Improve It.”

“Memory and its decline are major concerns of most all seniors,” said Karen Malatesta, CLVFF executive director. “While some decline is natural and unavoidable, there are a number of approaches for slowing the decline, and maintaining and improving memory that will be discussed at the congress.”

A neuropsychologist, a fitness expert, a nutritionist, a psychotherapist and a philosopher will present information on memory, Malatesta said. They will discuss the role of mental, physical and spiritual interaction in maintaining and improving memory.

The congress has been organized under the direction of CLVFF trustee June Glasmeier, who is the California Senior Legislature representative from Ventura County, and Margaret Fieweger, associate vice president emeritus of undergraduate studies at Cal State Northridge.

The congress is sponsored by more than 30 organizations and businesses focused on the senior community. The sponsors will distribute information and useful items.

Major sponsors include Oak View at University Village, Rotary Club of Newbury Park, Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks, Agoura Hills Senior Retreat, AlmaVia of Camarillo, Atria Hillcrest and Atria Las Posas, Buena Vista Hospice, Caregifters Medical Supplies, Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Mortuary and Vitas Hospice.

A light lunch will be served, Malatesta said. Admission to the congress is free, but since seating is limited, advance reservations are required.

The Senior Congress is one of a series of forums that the Future Foundation has presented for the benefit of various segments of the community.
