Salaries, benefits lead to high rates

Recent letters to the editor discuss the high water rates we have been paying, and the high salaries, pensions and benefits being given to the water district employees. One-third of 120 employees are in excess of six figures per year.

Incumbent Jeff Smith says the recent hikes in water rates have nothing to do with the salaries, pensions. Who, then, is paying? It has to be coming from ratepayers.

It upsets me that Mr. Smith has participated in creating windfall compensation for water district employees, and then sweeps away the issue by claiming that this isn’t the cause for high water rates, as though the abuse is rendered irrelevant. Through our excessive water rates, we are grossly overpaying the water district employees. How appalling that Mr. Smith does not see that.
