Road awareness

The way this article about the killed bicyclist was written, Det. Richard Curry assumed that the cyclist was struck because he was not sufficiently noticeable to the motorist who struck him. While this may very well have been the case, it is at least equally possible that the motorist was inattentive, distracted, or a plain bad driver.

It is a motorist’s job to be aware of vehicles smaller than his and to give them as wide a berth as is practically possible. The bicyclist should be given the benefit of the doubt, unless of course, he was wearing dark clothing, violating traffic laws, or was somehow hidden from view. Aside from obeying the traffic laws and wearing traditionally loud bicycle clothing there isn’t much a bicyclist can do to avoid being hit by a motor vehicle.

Det. Curry’s assumption should have been that the motorist was at fault, not the other way around. Robert Winning West Hills
