Ride on against ALS

The ALS Association Golden West Chapter will host the third annual SoCal Ride to Defeat ALS and Trail Run/Park Walk on Sat., May 4 at Dos Vientos Park, 4801 Borchard Road, Newbury Park.

The event is open to all cyclists, runners and walkers. All funds raised will support the ALS Association Golden West Chapter’s care services, public policy and research.

Registration is open through Tues., April 30 at socalride.org.

Walk-in registration opens at 7:30 a.m. at the park, followed by staggered start times.

The start times are: 8:15 a.m. for the 40-mile route, 8:50 a.m. for the 25-mile route, 9:15 a.m. for trail run/hike, 9:30 a.m. for the 5- and 10-mile routes, and 10:30 a.m. for the park walk.

Rest stops, route monitors and support vehicles will be available along the routes.

Upon completing the tour, riders and walkers will be welcomed back by cheering crowds and finish line festivities that include KOST 103.5 FM’s Mark Wallengren, live entertainment from singer-songwriter Carlos Calvo, a barbecue lunch, and more starting at 11 a.m.

Participants will receive a barbecue lunch upon completion of their rides.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a fatal, neurodegenerative disease. At this time, there is no known cure.
