Residents to help clean up the coast Sept. 25

The California Coastal Commission will present the 26th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day at more than 800 locations throughout the state from 9 a.m. to noon Sat., Sept. 25.

The purpose of the event is to clean up the beaches and shorelines and raise awareness about the importance of coastal environmental stewardship.

Last year the statewide cleanup saw record breaking participation from more than 82,000 volunteers who picked up nearly 1.4 million pounds of debris.

Volunteers are asked to bring a bucket or reusable bag to the cleanup for collecting trash.

Most cleanup sites are equipped with dumpsters or rollaway bins so workers can throw away what they collect and take the bucket back home.

Participants should also bring a lightweight pair of gardening gloves from home and a water bottle for replenishment.

The use of public transportation, bicycle or carpool to the cleanup location is encouraged.
