Residents now have an opportunity to voice their opinions about where the new Conifer water tank should go in Oak Park.

Large yellow signs that read A-7 and A-8 went up earlier this month indicating the two sites under consideration in public open space.

The site known as A8 is located near Doubletree Road and Clearhaven Drive just inside the entrance gate to the Palo Comado hiking trail in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

The other site, A-7, is near the intersection of Kanan Road and Churchwood Street. The tank would be placed to the north on the side of the ridge facing Oak Canyon Community Park.

An initial study indicates that aboveground and buried tanks are being considered for both sites. Several different pipeline configurations are also under consideration. Pipeline construction could affect traffic on surrounding streets, including Kanan Road, Doubletree Road and Sunnycrest Drive. The tank and its components would take four to seven months to construct.

The total project construction duration is expected to be about one year at a cost of between $5 million and $7 million depending on which site and pipeline route arechosen. The total area temporarily affected by construction work would be between four and nine acres, with less than an acre permanently affected by the tank and related equipment once the project is complete.

The study is available for review at the Oak Park Library and on the Triunfo Sanitation District website. In addition, a community meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Mon., May 21 at Oak Park Community Center. Triunfo staff members will present the study to the Oak Park Municipal Advisory Council, possibly at the MAC’s June meeting.

Triunfo officials have said the 41yearold, 1milliongallon existing tank at the western end of Conifer Street needs to be replaced due to deterioration. The study also notes that the old tank lacks “a foundation suitable for seismic upgrade.” At 2.1 million gallons, the new tank will be twice the size to better meet reserve needs and fire code standards.

Sixteen sites were originally considered but most were dismissed due to elevation, visual impact and seismic stability issues.
