Resident thanks teens concerned for her safety

Good deeds rarely get the recognition they deserve these days. The news is full of hate, crime and war. Tonight (Aug. 23), around 11 p.m., I was reminded that there is still a tremendous amount of good right here in our own community, especially among the young.

Tonight, three young men, who do not know me from Adam, came to my door to report that they had seen a man wearing a black ski mask right behind my house on the Lake Lindero golf course. "In my quiet, safe Agoura Hills neighborhood?" I asked.

I was actually quite frightened, an emotion I rarely exhibit here in safe suburbia. But there they were, at my door, late at night, and as polite as can be.

They said, "Ma’am, we didn’t want anything to happen to you. We wanted you to know what we saw so you could keep your family safe. We were worried." These young men were barely 15 or 16. These were just guys, kids rather, hanging out, who wanted to do the right thing.

One of the boys said, "I guess we could have just kept on walking, but a guy in a ski mask in August in Agoura? There is definitely something wrong here and we were worried about you." Seriously, I was nearly brought to tears.

I had my daughters run upstairs and look out onto the gold course. Sure enough, they saw the man, and gave the exact description the young men gave. Whoa. Not in my neighborhood, but it was.

The sheriff’s department was called immediately.

I never did get their names and I wish I had, but I invited them back for Pizookies, anytime they wanted, the very least I could do. Their consideration of my family’s safety and their neighborhood watch prowess could not go unrewarded.

I hope that this letter is published and I really hope these boys see it so they may see how appreciative I am. I do not know if the deputy, who was at my house within 10 minutes, found this potential prowler.

I know I will not sleep tonight out of fear, and likely my dogs will keep at least one eye open, but I want the parents of these young men to know that they are doing it right. You are raising fine young men and you have my eternal gratitude. And to these three precious young men, thank you.

You could have prevented a real tragedy by being astute, alert and by caring. You will always be in my prayers. Godspeed.
