Relay is pleased with donations

The American Cancer Society may have already surpassed its fundraising goals and team participant numbers before this weekend’s fifth annual Agoura Relay for Life event has even started, but organizers say there’s always room for more.

The fundraiser slated for April 28 and 29 at Willow Elementary School already has garnered $105,000 in pledges from 57 teams, said Ling Wu, event chair for the American Cancer Society.

“ACS gave us a goal of $95,000,” Wu said. “We’re $10,000 over that goal, and 10 teams over the team goal. We’ll make room for more teams.”

In addition to a kid’s camp, salsa fundraiser, frozen T-shirt event, limbo, three-legged race, jazzercise classes and muscle massages, a “Miss Relay” contest will add a touch of humor to the day’s festivities. During the contest, men will dress as gals and women as guys, Wu said.

The multicultural “healing circle” will feature leaders from every faith. Wu said a Jewish cantor, a Catholic choir from St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Thousand Oaks, a Native American group and others will participate during the 8 p.m. Saturday program.

A Chinese Buddhist group will recycle materials during the event. At 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, the group will conduct a sign language presentation for a safe clean environment, Wu said.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Wu said.
