Children are much more likely to be overweight today than a decade or two ago, and pediatricians say it’s important to catch the problem early.
Pediatricians use a measurement called BMI (body mass index) to define overweight and obesity. BMI is the ratio of weight to height. More than 15 percent of children and teens are at or above the 95th percentile for BMI, which is considered overweight or obese. That figure has doubled in the last 20 years.
