Recycling makes big gains

The city of Calabasas last year collected more than 272,000 pounds of mixed electronic waste, surpassing the city’s goal of 200,000 pounds, according to environmental services supervisor Alex Farassati.

The e-waste included more than 93,000 pounds of television and computer monitors and 430 fluorescent light bulbs. E-waste round ups are open to residents and businesses of all cities and communities.

The city also collected nearly 17,500 pounds of dry cell batteries, an increase of 62 percent from last year. In addition, more than 4,300 gallons of paint were collected, as well as 745 gallons of used motor oil, 247 used oil filters, 81 car batteries and 71 gallons of antifreeze.

In partnership with the Lions International, the city also collects old eyeglasses, which will be cleaned, sorted and shipped to developing countries where they’re given free to those in need.
