Recreation brochure is free

"Outdoors in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA)," a free quarterly calendar of events available from the National Park Service (NPS), highlights recreational programs available in the SMMNRA including guided hikes, nature walks, bird watching, tidepool study as well as various subject discussions.

Special new programs include "Film and the American Landscape" which includes presentations by film industry professionals; the "Natural History Series" which focuses on educating participants about the local flora and fauna; and "The Photographers’ Workshop Series" based on a successful recent photo contest sponsored by NPS.

Other programs include presentations offered both day and evening hours on weekdays and weekends by more than 30 nonprofit organizations as well as the national and state parks.

More than 150 programs are listed in "Outdoors."

To receive a copy of the brochure, call (805) 370-2301 or stop by the National Park Service Visitor Center (open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at 401 W. Hillcrest Drive, Thousand Oaks.
