Recovery group to meet

SMART Recovery is a free, sober social support group that meets every Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at 30101 Agoura Court, Ste. 103, Agoura Hills.

SMART, which stands for Self- Management and Recovery Training, is a “crosstalk” process group that uses cognitive behavioral therapy to empower individuals struggling with addiction to take charge of their own recovery.

The goals of the program are to help attendees: build and maintain motivation; cope with urges; manage thoughts, feelings and behaviors; and live a balanced life.

The process has no spiritual component, although personal spiritual feelings are respected and welcome.

Attendees do not have to identify themselves as an “alcoholic” or an “addict” to share.

A facilitator leads the group in respectful crosstalk that identifies irrational beliefs and suggests new ways of coping.

SMART Recovery is particularly effective with those who struggle with 12-step concepts but it is fully compatible with AA and many people use both.
