Reclaiming family time topic of free seminar

William Doherty, Ph.D., Pepperdine University distinguished visiting professor, will speak about reclaiming family time, reviving family rituals and regaining leadership as parents from 3 to 5 p.m. Sun., June 6 on the Pepperdine campus, 24255 Pacific Coast Hwy., Malibu.

Many of today’s families suffer from "time famine, scheduled hyperactivity and parental anxiety about how to provide opportunities without running children and parents ragged." In the past 20 years, children’s free time has declined by 12 hours a week, time spent on structured sports activities has doubled, family dinners are down by a third, and the number of families taking a vacation together has decreased by 28 percent.

During his talk, Doherty will present more than a time-management tool. He will help parents think about the role they play in their children’s lives and how their children play a role in their lives.

Doherty is a professor and director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program in the Department of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota. He has practiced as a marriage and family therapist for more than 25 years. His recent books are "Take Back Your Kids" and "Putting Family First: Successful Strategies for Reclaiming Family Life in a Hurry-Up World," co-authored with Barbara Carlson.

The event is free and open to the public. To RSVP or for more information, call Lucy Perrin at (310) 506-8551.
