Readers support Henry Stern

Our state Sen. Fran Pavley’s term limited out. During her time in office she obtained an international reputation for clean air and clean water legislation.

Now all her work is in danger as Chevron Oil is channeling huge amounts of money through PACs with benign-sounding names to Chevron’s choice candidate.

Voters should look for the candidate whose flyers are paid for by PACs with harmless-sounding professional names.

There are six people running for the state 27th senatorial seat. One candidate has sent out five times as many flyers as the other six combined. Flyers are expensive. Question: where does this vast amount of money come from?

On Tues., June 7, vote for Henry Stern, whom Pavley endorses, in order to protect the environmental gains for which she worked.

Henry Stern is a Harvard- and Berkeley-educated environmental lawyer who has served as Pavley’s senior policy advisor and has helped write environmental protection legislation.

Having seen enough glossy advertising stock to account for burning down half the rain forest, it should come as a shock to nobody that Janice Kamenir- Reznik has bundles of money behind her campaign.

Reznik and her husband built their careers representing developers. Reznik’s literature states that it’s paid for by the California Dental Association. That might be because it’s “like pulling teeth” to find out where the money really comes from.

My understanding is there is a PAC called “Keeping Californians Working” in which the dental PAC contributed $500,000; Chevron put in $1 million; the Apartment Owners Association, $250,000 and the Personal Insurance Federation, $125,000, etc.

They have spent $284,000 to date, but none yet on our Senate race.

However, the California Dental PAC has contributed $137,000 in support of Kamenir-Reznik from another committee that has not received Chevron funding.

It smells very much like these alleged “dentists” are acting as a front for Chevron Oil.

Stern is endorsed by Sen. Fran Pavley, Congressman Ted Lieu, The Sierra Club and many other environmentalists. It is easy to understand why big oil would not want a staunch environmentalist like attorney Henry Stern.

As an aside, Reznik’s law partner and husband, Ben Reznik, fought the City of Agoura Hills on behalf of those who wanted to develop Chesebro Meadow and should be considered a well- documented adversary of our city by those who live here and support open space and the wildlife corridor.

I urge you not to be taken in by all the sloganeering “money can buy” and instead, vote for attorney Henry Stern to carry on the incredible legacy of Sen. Fran Pavley.

We need to focus on the primary on June 7. We need to think about that and consider our state Legislature and be informed about those running for state office.

Janice Kamenir-Reznik has jumped into the Senate District 27 race to replace Sen. Fran Pavley. This seat is also being sought by Henry Stern, a top Pavley staffer, a very intelligent and hardworking young man.

My focus is on our environment, treasured open space and maintaining the beauty and sanctity of our Mediterranean climate.

If Janice Reznik becomes our new senator, we will be stuck with her priorities of close relationships to development factions.

Janice maybe a wonderful person, but her prior history and relationships, individually and as a law partner with her husband, Ben Reznik, a recognized prodevelopment attorney, makes for a poor selection.

Fran established what is best for our environment and the future well-being of our geographic area. This will be significantly affected by the election of Janice Reznik.

The PACs that support her reveal significant sources of funds from big oil companies and large groups of developers. It is amazing how many funding sources exist that can hide behind the independent associations that move money.

In voting in the election, you investigate the background and sympathies of those running and cast your vote accordingly. Be sensitive to our environment and maintaining our natural resources.

Henry Stern is the most viable and experienced individual to promote these interests. An educator and environmental attorney, he worked with former Congressman Henry Waxman to promote clean, renewable energy.

He is a teacher at UCLA in environmental and climate policy and a pro bono attorney helping families in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He recently drafted the Porter Ranch legislation to stop the gas wells.

No question that Henry Stern is the best for our district.

On every issue from Chesebro Meadow to the Liberty Canyon Wildlife corridor, our neighbors are fighting to defend our wildlife and open space.

Our wildlife in the Santa Monica Mountains has been under assault from the use of poison bait boxes, loss of habitat due to development and the destruction of hillsides for vineyards.

Henry Stern understands the sensitivity and importance of preserving our wildlife and natural habitat in the 27th Senate District. Henry is a true environmentalist running to be our next state senator.

As a 20-year educator at Malibu High School, I first met Henry as a student-athlete. I was always impressed by his leadership abilities, good attitude and competitive approach to his academic and athletic endeavors.

Henry went on to Harvard and then Berkeley law school. He then went on to serve on the House Energy and Commerce Committee under Congressman Henry Waxman.

For the last four years he has been my neighbor and current state Sen. Fran Pavley’s senior policy advisor. Sen. Pavley supports Henry to carry on her impressive environmental legacy.

Growing up in the Santa Monica Mountains, Henry had the unique opportunity to develop a lasting relationship with the natural beauty of our community. If elected to be our senator, Henry will work tirelessly to work to protect our environment and open spaces.

I also believe Henry understands the needs of our small businesses and will work to boost our local economy. If you had any doubt about Henry’s commitment to our environment, a Chevron-funded super PAC is spending money to defeat him.

Henry’s enthusiasm and energetic spirit will serve him well as he is open to creative ideas that would benefit the constituents of the 27th District.

Following Henry’s impressive journey throughout his career, I am confident he is well prepared to represent the 27th District in Sacramento.
