Program to celebrate world music





‘World City’ will feature L.A.’s rich cultural traditions


The Music Center Education Division has launched the inaugural season of "World City," a new performance series celebrating Los Angeles’ rich cultural traditions. Presented free of charge, the programs are at 1 and 2 p.m. Saturdays, Feb. 21, March 20, April 24, May 15 and June 5 at the W.M. Keck Foundation Children’s Amphitheatre, a 300-seat outdoor performance space at Walt Disney Concert Hall at First and Grand in downtown Los Angeles.


In addition, free pre- and post-performance arts workshops will be offered in the adjacent Blue Ribbon Garden. (In the event of rain, performances will be moved inside.) For further information on "World City," please call (213) 250-ARTS or visit www.musiccenter.org/education.


Upcoming performances include:


Feb. 21: Mussukeba Sane West African Dance Ensemble presents dance and music from Senegal, Mali and Guinea; master storyteller Diane Ferlatte will share stories and songs about the African-American experience.


March 20: Kahurangi Maori Dance Theatre of New Zealand celebrates the heritage of the Maori people, an ancient South Pacific culture. Chuna McIntyre will present a performance of Central Yup’ik Eskimo culture.


April 24: Xochimoki presents music suggesting the mysterious Amazon rain forests, while Ballet Folclorico do Brasil will perform dances reflecting the fusion of Brazil’s African, Portuguese and indigenous influences.
