Program teaches gardeners about proper composting

Ian Eales, an engineer and avid composter, will share his expert advice on the proper care and feeding of compost in a free program at 1 p.m. Sun., Jan. 30 at Wild Birds Unlimited, 22110 Ventura Blvd., Woodland Hills. Eales has been composting for about 50 years.

Composting is often referred to as "black gold," especially by gardeners stuck with hard, clay-like impenetrable soil that is inhospitable to growing things. Composting provides rich nutrients while helping gardeners to practice recycling and responsible stewardship of the earth.

Eales will also discuss how to best use compost and how compost may help backyard gardeners create a diverse wildlife habitat.
