A fight between a husband and wife early Monday morning ended in violence.

Police say a 57-year-old woman is dead and a 55-year-old man in custody after a shooting at the Westlake Canyon apartments in the 2300 block of Fountain Crest Lane.

Names have not been released.

The call came in to Ventura County sheriff’s dispatch around 6:57 a.m., Capt. Eric Buschow said. He said the husband was “present and cooperative” when deputies arrived. A handgun was recovered at the scene, police said.

Dispatch told responding deputies that the man said he used a 9 mm handgun to shoot his wife after she attacked him with a pan, according to scanner traffic.

The woman was taken to the hospital but declared dead sometime later.

Neighbors told the Acorn that officers and an ambulance had responded to the scene last week.
