Poet laureate applicants sought

The California Arts Council is soliciting nominations from literary organizations, college and university literary departments, poetry critics, other poets or other qualified people from the literary field for the position of Poet Laureate of California. The deadline for nominations is Feb. 19.

The Arts Council will narrow the field to three before presenting the candidates to Gov. Gray Davis, who will then select a poet to be appointed to the honorary office.

The California Poet Laureate will be required to make a number of public readings during his or her four-year tenure and undertake a project designed to bring the poetic arts to Californians and to California students who might otherwise have little opportunity to be exposed to poetry.
