Play to celebrate life of poet Dylan Thomas

Welsh poet Dylan Thomas gained enduring fame and popularity in the U.S. during four reading tours he made of the U.S. and Canada in the 1950s, where he took center stage in theaters and in bars and mesmerized audiences with his intensely expressive verse and passionate flair for language. Actor Bob Kingdom will appear on stage at the Madrid Theatre in Canoga Park portraying the poet in "Dylan Thomas—Return Journey" from Tues., Oct. 14 through Thurs., Oct. 16. Showtimes at the theater, 21622 Sherman Way, are at 8 p.m. except for a special student performance at 10 a.m. on Wed., Oct. 15. Tickets range from $20 to $25.

The play was originally directed by another noted Welshman, Sir Anthony Hopkins. Kingdom has played the role "with stature and sharp wit" for the past 15 years. The play is an evening of celebration and discovery of Thomas’ prose and poetry, and is performed as part of a worldwide celebration of the 50th anniversary of Thomas’ death.

Tickets are available through the Madrid Theatre box office at (818) 347-9938. The theatre is located in the historic "Antique Row" in downtown Canoga Park. It’s a facility of the city of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department and is professionally managed by Valley Cultural Center.
