Plastic bag police strike in Calabasas

Regarding “Most Calabasas shoppers embrance plastic bag ban,” I wish I’d had the chance to ask the Hollywood resident quoted in the recent issue of The Acorn a few questions. Her comment “I’m all about being forced to do the right thing” expressed what bothers me most about this new law.

A suggestion to bring your own bags or use paper—I’m okay with that. Some photos at the checkstand of wasted grocery bags at the local dump—fine. But being forced to do “the right thing?” Really?

Would any of those who are in favor of this law be grateful to the Healthy Eating Police for prohibiting french fries, double cheeseburgers and dessert at local restaurants? Would they thank the Fitness Enforcement Officials for getting them off the couch every evening and locking them out until they completed their mandatory exercise regimen, enforcing the Fresh Air and Exercise Initiative?

And would they would write a heartfelt note of thanks after being carted off once a month to plant trees for a local charity to fulfill their Green Activity hours?

It’s getting more than a little frightening to watch one after another “do the right thing” laws get passed in Calabasas. I’d rather live in a community where we are free to make these personal decisions as we see fit.

I’m all about liberty. Leslie Godwin Calabasas
