He may look like a Mac truck but "Tank," a stocky pit bull that was stolen from the Agoura Animal Shelter on Sun. April 17, is a loving dog.

"He’s not a fighter, he’s a lover," said Robin Kahrs, a Westlake Village resident who volunteers at the shelter. Kahrs and shelter officials are worried because Tank is sick and needs his medications. Whoever took the dog didn’t take the medicines or the paperwork sitting next to his cage.

When volunteers left the shelter on Sunday night, the dog was still in his kennel in an isolation ward at the back of the facility. "He had a very bad case of kennel cough, which is contagious," said Gail Miley, shelter manager.

Pit bulls are notorious for having weak immune systems. This dog sounded like a baby with croup, said Kahrs. That’s why he was placed in a quiet spot, away from the other dogs.

"Although he is a lovely boy, people can get the wrong impression because of the way Tank looks," said Kahrs. His ears are cropped and he isn’t neutered yet because he was too sick for the operation.

"He was the kind of pit bull that you want out in public," said Kahrs. Tank was found as a stray. Shelter officials don’t know why he was abandoned but he appeared to be well cared for, they said.

"He would already have been out of the shelter had he not gotten sick," said Kahrs, noting the dog was about to be taken in by a pit bull rescue organization.

Miley said no questions will be asked if Tank is returned. The shelter is primarily concerned for the dog’s well being and want to get him back.

Tank is very special to the volunteers and staff at the shelter, said Kahrs. "We are very worried about his safety and health and hope whoever has him will bring him back to the shelter or at the very least let us know he is safe and being well taken care of," she said. This dog is sweet and affectionate, "a true ambassador for his breed," Kahrs said.
