Peripheral arterial disease can lead to complications

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a serious health concern that, if untreated, can lead to heart attack, stroke, amputation and death.

Over the past four months, West Coast Vascular has hosted several free screenings for PAD in Ventura, Camarillo, Simi Valley and Ojai in order to educate the public for the September PAD awareness month. These screenings resulted in numerous people diagnosed with PAD and others recommended for varicose vein treatment.

In addition, a large number of screening patients were diagnosed with carotid artery disease, a serious condition in which the arteries in the neck become narrowed or blocked. Both diseases, when left untreated, can lead to health risks.

Peripheral arterial disease occurs when fatty deposits or plaque builds up inside the vessels that carry blood to the legs and feet. This buildup can narrow the channels through which blood flows, restricting or blocking blood flow.

If PAD becomes severe, it can lead to disability, loss of a foot or leg to amputation, or even death.
