Pavley named chairwoman of environmental
safety committee

State Assembly Speaker Herb Wesson recently named Assemblywoman Fran Pavley (D-Woodland Hills) as the new chair of the Assembly Committee on Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials.

As a member of this committee during the 2001-2002 session, Pavley deliberated on legislative measures that addressed such topics as leaking underground storage tanks, pesticides and schools, coastal water quality, hazardous waste management, the protection of drinking water sources, air pollution, and the financing and redevelopment of contaminated properties.

The committee’s business is largely defined by the programs and policies administered by the California Environmental protection Agency (EPA) and its boards, departments, and office. In addition to hearing legislative measures concerning California’s environment, the committee also periodically conducts oversight hearings on Cal EPA to ensure that it’s fully and efficiently implementing and enforcing legislative mandates.

On Sept. 19 Pavley will participate in a joint hearing of the Assembly Committee on Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials and the Assembly Select Committee on California Children’s School Readiness and Health.

The hearing will include issues such as why children are more vulnerable to environmental dangers than adults, how children are exposed, what efforts have been put forth at the state and community levels to protect children, and what future actions should be taken.
