Pat And Mike Hanley Congratulated

Bob Majorino, broker/ owner of Prudential California Realty, extended his congratulations and thanks to agents Pat and Mike Hanley from the company’s North Ranch/Westlake Village office. For the past several months, the Hanleys have invested literally hundreds of hours in the biannual “Every 15 Minutes” program, which culminated in December 2008 at Thousand Oaks High School.

The program is based on the statistic that every 15 minutes someone is killed by a drunk driver. Because of the extensive amount of work, cost, and detail, the program is only presented once every two years. In both 2006 and 2008, the Hanleys were co-chairs of the program. All of their children have graduated from Thousand Oaks High, with one son still enrolled. A squadron of volunteers also assisted with the effort.

Scores of juniors and seniors watched as a grisly and astonishingly realistic scene unfolded before them as they filled the bleachers in the school parking lot. The reenactment included two demolished vehicles, with five students playing the roles of injured or dead victims of a DUI accident. Fire, police, and emergency medical personnel surrounded the scene in an effort to save the “lives” of those injured, while those pronounced “DOA” were placed on stretchers and covered with signature yellow blankets in front of the somber crowd of teens. The coroner drove in and took them off to the morgue.

The girl playing the part of the DUI driver performed and failed her field sobriety test directly in front of her peers, was cuffed, and taken away to jail. The following day, there was a memorial service in the school gym for the departed. Countless boxes of tissues were handed out to weeping teens. The program is proving extremely effective in making a sincere impact on our children and their choices when getting behind the wheel or in a car with an impaired driver.

School principal Tim Carpenter and Thousand Oaks mayor Jaqui Irwin were on hand to congratulate the Hanleys and asserted that, hands down, it was the best version of the program they had ever seen. With Newbury Park High scheduling their program in the spring, they have a sterling model to follow, but a tough act as well.

All of the Conejo Valley owes a debt of gratitude to the Hanleys for their unimaginable investment of time and energy to this critically important effort. They can be reached at (805) 231-5852.
