Park wins water award

Malibu Legacy Park, the centerpiece of the city’s $50-million commitment to improving ocean water quality, has won the Water Quality Improvement Award administered by the Water Environment Federation.

This prize marks the seventh major award for Legacy Park in the past year. The park now holds an array of commendations, including the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Project of the Year Award.

Completed in October 2010, Legacy Park transformed 15 acres in the heart of Malibu into a central park that has proven to be one of the most innovative stormwater and urban runoff projects in California.

This state-of-the-art project improves water quality to Malibu Creek, Malibu Lagoon and nearby beaches by capturing up to 2.6 million gallons per day of stormwater and urban runoff for treatment and disinfection, and using that water to offset potable water usage.

The creation of Legacy Park also restored and developed native coastal habitats while creating open space for recreation and environmental education.

The park has a living learning center, informational kiosks, an outdoor classroom, a cultural interpretive center and other features to provide information and education about flora and fauna along the Southern California coast.
