The National Park Service is accepting applications from classroom teachers for its Teacher to Ranger to Teacher (TRT) program at Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

The TRT program will begin in late June and run for six to eight weeks. Teachers will be involved in staffing visitor contact stations, creating activities and programs for children and families, conducting guided hikes and programs, and assisting park educators in developing curriculum for field science programs.

Teachers will receive training, a NPS uniform, a stipend of $375 per week, and reimbursement for travel. Teachers in Los Angeles and Ventura counties can receive transportation to bring their students out to the park during the school year.

Teachers in the program work as uniformed park rangers for the summer at National Park units throughout the country, developing curriculum, educating children and the public, and pursuing other projects based on expertise.

When the teacher-rangers return to their classrooms, they develop and present curriculumbased lessons that draw on their summer experiences.

In April, during National Park Week, teacher-rangers wear the NPS uniform to school, discuss their summer as a park ranger, and engage students and other teachers in activities that relate to America’s national parks.

Interested teachers should email education specialist Lisa Okazaki at lisa_ okazaki@nps. gov or call (805) 370-2348, ext. 203

Applications are due by Feb. 7 and can be downloaded at www.nps.gov/samo/forteachers/ professionaldevelopment.htm.
