The National Park Service offers the following tips for hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
+Water is life. Carry plenty of water and drink it. One or more quarts should be enough for short walks. Longer hikes require more than one quart of water. Alcohol is not a good substitute for water.
+Never hike alone. Use the buddy system so someone can go for help if needed.
+Stay on established trails. Do not take a short cut. This is how most hikers get lost...
