Park equipment given to Haiti

Sumac Park in Agoura Hills has installed new playground equipment and will send its used swings, slides and monkey bars to Haiti.

Great Western Park, working with the city, will remove and replace the old apparatus. The Oxnard based Great Western Park, in turn, is working with Kids Around the World, a nonprofit group that recycles and refurbishes old play equipment and ships it to other countries.

The swing sets and jungle gyms removed from Sumac Park are destined for a park or school in Haiti.

Amy Brink, Agoura Hills Department of Community Services director, said the donation to Haiti “definitely sets a trend for the city.”

“Anytime the city needs to destroy something or retire it, the fact that it’s being donated to an organization with a cause makes it even better,” Brink said.

“We’ve donated old computers before, but the playground has an even bigger meaning.”

T y l e r Kyriopolous, Great Western Park and Playground spokesperson, said the equipment from about 30 playgrounds is scheduled

to be

shipped to Haiti this month. The playgrounds will be installed in refugee camps where families have been living since their homes and communities were destroyed in the large January earthquake.
