Or Echad hosting Mitzvah Day

Or Echad (One Light) is the newest alternative to the traditional Jewish community. Its goal is uniting Jewish families from all over Los Angeles.

On May 19 Or Echad hosted its inaugural Mitzvah Day with families from Newbury Park, Lang Ranch, Oak Park, Agoura, West Hills, Porter Ranch, West L.A, Canyon Country and Stevenson Ranch.

Mitzvah Day was the culmination of a year of monthly events that Or Echad sponsored to bring families together to celebrate Judaism. Mitzvah Day was a chance for everyone to work together to help others.

The day started with socializing and snacking before getting to work. In three hours the group decorated and filled 43 gift bags of toiletries for the Northeast Valley Health Corporation, which provides healthcare to the uninsured and the homeless; made 15 blankets for the Linus Project for children’s hospitals; decorated 50 cards for the Israeli defense forces; and collected 165 pounds of food to donate to SOVA food bank.

Rabbi Ira Rosenfeld and his wife, Cantor Beth Wasserman Rosenfeld, are founders of the Or Echad Community and Home- Shul, its home-based education program. HomeShul provides students a learning experience with experiential activities.

Ira Rosenfeld brings a background in music, comedy and acting. Beth Wasserman Rosenfeld has experience in musical theater. Together they integrate ancient insights with modern life through a variety of learning styles as well as music, drama, art and games.

HomeShul groups meet in the Conejo Valley, San Fernando Valley and Santa Clarita.

Monthly events like Mitzvah Day help to connect all the HomeShul families and others to create the Or Echad community.

HomeShul enrollment begins in June. Or Echad’s High Holy Day services will take place at Founders Hall in Calabasas in September.
