Opera talk

The Friends of Platt Library will host a free L.A. Opera talk, “Opera and Social Politics,” at 6:15 p.m. Tues., April 10 at the Los Angeles Public Library, Platt Branch, 23600 Victory Blvd., Woodland Hills.

Norm Cadman, a spokesperson for the opera company, will use excerpts from several operas to discuss how the composers used their work to illustrate the social and political dynamics of their societies and sometimes to further a political cause.

He will also show some of the ways that modern directors will often alter aspects of a production to relate the story more directly to contemporary conditions.
