OnStar takes car phone users to the next plateau: Operators!

Since my column about driving distractions, a few weeks ago, it seems that the media has been full of stories about how dangerous it is to use a cell phone while driving. For most of us the old analog phone has been replaced by a small digital that fits into the pocket or purse but, in my experience, takes both effort and concentration to use, not a good idea at freeway speeds.

General Motors’ OnStar division has been known for the emergency service communications system installed in many GM vehicles. Now they are taking the link to the OnStar operator to a new plateau.

The OnStar personal calling feature will allow subscribers to place calls to anyone via hands-free, voice activated technology. This will use the same three-button configuration that is now installed in the factory in many GM cars and trucks. It does not have a keypad, rather you will speak to the system and it will dial the number. This enables the driver to keep his hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

With a new relationship with Bell Atlantic/GTE, drivers will now pay OnStar for their cellular use. OnStar is buying cellular minutes from Bell/GTE and re-selling them to OnStar subscribers. There is no need to establish a contract with the local cellular provider. This will soon make OnStar the largest re-seller of cellular service in the US. OnStar expects to have 1 million subscribers by the end of this year and will add about 2 million new subscribers each year after that. Consumer benefits include one stop shopping. Subscribers will receive their core OnStar safety and security services, convenience and concierge services, personal calling capabilities, and internet-based information from one source and pay one bill. With this system, the phone is always with you, you can’t leave your car on the kitchen counter! It is always charged, the vehicle acts a generator and you get competitive prices with no monthly cellular access fee and no additional charges i.e. roaming. And there is the convenience and safety factors, hands-free, voice activated, hands on the wheel and eyes on the road!

All OnStar services are delivered via voice interface with no displays or keyboards to potentially distract the driver and the luxury of a real live person to put your calls through.

Check out the new OnStar services at local GM dealerships. The service is not offered in all GM cars and trucks.
