The re-greening of Oak Park’s open spaces

 
When I first began exploring the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District’s many meandering trails in Oak Park, we were smack in the middle of our harshest drought period. Rainfall was minimal to nonexistent. There was nary a stitch of greenery to be encountered.
To me, Oak Park’s trails presented a great rocky oasis, gritty and dusty, fringed by withered chaparral plants. As a hiker previously unfamiliar with the area, I accepted this as the norm.
