On Social Security

The recent article by Essie Landry on Medicare Part D was informative but unfortunately only to a limited percentage of those persons eligible for the program. It is a pity that more attention was not also given to those already enrolled and already paying premiums, as I am.

I had to sign up for Part D at the age of 77 at the end of 2008, when I lost coverage under my previous employer’s retirees health and prescription plans. I now find from the 2010 materials, which have just arrived through the mail, that my monthly premiums have gone up by 67 percent, a deductible has been introduced and the option of copays been replaced by coinsurance up to 55 percent—obviously much more expensive.

Further, certain medications have been removed from the list of drugs covered.

Checking with a couple of plans obtained from “Medicare and You 2010,” I was told to “talk to the insurance company since we are only the suppliers.”

Perhaps Ms. Landry can explain this and advise how to choose the plan to match the specific drug needs of the individual.
