Oak Park schools have computers of no use to them.

With the rapid growth of technology, 2-year-old computers are quickly obsolete for teaching.

School officials demand modern technology; as new computers enter the marketplace, old computers only occupy valuable space in areas that are already crowded.

The Oak Park Unified School District (OPUSD) Board of Education decided recently to host an auction to move out some of the district’s older computers. Officials don’t want to waste good, although old machinery.

Martin Klauss, assistant superintendent of administrative services, assured boardmembers that the computers were definitely put to good use. But newer technology, he said, is vitally important.

It was further noted by OPUSD Superintendent Marilyn Lippiatt that the surplus computer equipment was in fact no longer suitable for instruction.

If the computers don’t sell, disposal becomes the last option.

All members of the board were in favor of an auction.

Along with the obsolete/surplus computer equipment are several machines beyond repair. The board also recommended that this equipment also be put up for auction, possibly for parts. As with the older computers, if there’s no sale, disposal will take place.

OPUSD’s technology department was compiling an itemized listing of surplus computer equipment from throughout the district.

All school sites were given an opportunity to review the list and select any items that may still be useful. Remaining items will be declared as surplus and sold to the highest bidder.

Revenue generated after covering the expense of the sale will be earmarked for the district’s general fund.

The specific time, date and place of the auction hasn’t been determined. The Acorn will publicize details when that information becomes available.
