North Ranch Fire Station opens

Built in the same Spanish motif as the elegant homes that surround it, Ventura County’s new 6,000-square-foot Fire Station 37 opened for business last week.

Ventura County Supervisor Frank Schillo said a deal was struck with developers to build the $1.4 million station almost 20 years ago, but that financial restrictions placed on fire department budgets kept the construction on hold.

Schillo also said area homeowners challenged the fire station’s appearance.

"We had a call to my office from a neighbor asking why someone was being allowed to construct a home with such huge garage doors," Schillo said, referring to the station. "So, I guess we managed to get the fire station to fit in here in North Ranch."

Ventura County Fire District Chief Bob Roper said he wanted everyone to know that Station 37 – along with all the stations under his command – are very much the people’s neighborhood fire stations, "just like in the old days."

"I want everyone to know that they can just stop in and say hello to the fire crews and take a tour any time they want," Roper said. "This is their station."

The new station is location at 2010 Upper Ranch Road at the intersection of Upper Ranch and Kanan roads. Officials hope the $1.4 million station will take some of the load off Station 36 Deerhill Road in Oak Park and Station 31 on Duesenberg Drive in Thousand Oaks.
