Nominations for Gibbs award

The Calabasas Environmental Commission is accepting nominations for its annual Carl Gibbs award.

The environmental excellence award named for the late Carl Gibbs honors individuals, businesses, municipalities, government agencies, organizations and institutions working to benefit the environment. Gibbs died last year at 67.

An environmental commissioner and one of Calabasas’ founders, Gibbs and his wife of 38 years, Babette, lived in the Old Topanga area since 1978. He helped create the city’s oak tree and scenic corridor ordinances and is credited with steering Calabasas toward environmental concerns and policies.

In selecting award recipients, the commission looks for California work that resulted in cleaner air or water, less waste, less traffic, conservation of energy and natural resources, efficient and waterconserving landscaping, reduced use of hazardous materials and other personal efforts.

Nominations from individuals, companies, government agencies, educators, students and others will be accepted until Dec. 3. The environmental commission will meet Dec. 4 to discuss the nominees, according to Alex Farassati, environmental services supervisor.

At the commission’s next meeting in 2008, award plaques will be presented.

The awards committee will consider measurable improvement to environmental quality, creativity and innovation in technology, involving employees and community members, reaching out to stakeholders, taking definitive steps to prevent pollution, and minimizing costs or demonstrating a payback on related investments.
